Climate Change Secretariat

The Climate Change Secretariat is responsible for the coordination and development of Nunavut’s energy strategy to address our dependence on imported fuels.

The Secretariat monitors energy-related issues, develops and delivers energy-related programs and services, and coordinates action on energy decisions.

The Climate Change Secretariat is also responsible for energy and climate change mitigation awareness. This work is aimed at increasing adoption of energy conservation practices, reducing energy waste, improving understanding of energy use, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The goal is to foster a “conservation ethic” among Nunavummiut that builds on traditional IQ principles and leads to measurable reductions in Nunavut’s energy consumption, energy costs, and Nunavut’s continued reliance on fossil fuels.

Ikummatiit: An Energy Strategy for Nunavut was written in 2007 to provide information and insights for Nunavut’s energy policies and related Government programs.

Ikummatiit addresses these important topics:

  • Improve the security of the energy system by reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, diversifying energy supply to include clean, alternative energy and domestic energy sources.
  • Manage the cost of energy-based services such as transportation, heating, hot water, lighting, and cooking, by reducing the cost of providing energy and improving the efficiency of its use.
  • Reduce the impact on the environment by reducing energy-related emissions which contribute to pollution and climate change.
  • Provide business and employment opportunities as the Territory increases energy efficiency and uses renewable and domestic energy sources.

Provincial/Territorial Work

The Government of Nunavut, as represented by the Energy Secretariat, participates in a number of Federal/Provincial/Territorial (FPT) energy forums with governments around Canada.

Council of Federation Canadian Energy Strategy

The Canadian Energy Strategy Working Group, established in July 2012, is led by Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Tom Marshall, Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger, and Alberta, and composed of provincial and territorial Ministers of Energy. The working group is building on the 2007 Council of the Federation document entitled A Shared Vision for Energy in Canada.

Energy and Mines Minster’s Conference

The Energy and Mines Ministers’ Conference is an annual gathering of federal, provincial and territorial ministers responsible for energy and mining portfolios. At these meetings, ministers discuss shared priorities for collaborative action to advance energy and mining development across the country. The 2018 edition of the EMMC conference will take place here, in Iqaluit. The focus will be on remote communities and energy.
